Shown here for the first time, this new body of work depicts the British landscape in locations including Dartmoor, the Norfolk Coast, Northumberland, the Chalk Downs and the White Peak. Many of the images explore the relationship between human beings and their environment, where the ground we tread is an accumulation of cultural, economic and spiritual behaviours.
David has travelled extensively and photographed all over the world, yet still prefers the landscape of this island, where the constantly changing weather provides the perfect backdrop for his images. He favours those months of the year where the days are shorter, working in collaboration with nature, in wild environments and frequently in adverse weather conditions, waiting assiduously for the conditions to be right. The photographs were shot exclusively in black and white, employing traditional techniques.
David Hatfull taught photography before embarking on a freelance career as a corporate and editorial photographer. For over 30 years, he was commissioned by numerous multinational companies for work that took him to all parts of the UK as well as to many international locations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photography Society, and his awards include both Kodak and Canon Photographer of the Year. His photographs have been widely exhibited in the UK and abroad and was included in “20 British Photographers” – a touring exhibition of the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
